Space Policy and Good Governance

ABOUT THE SPACE POLICY AND GOOD GOVERNANCE PROJECT
As we witness the exponential investment in space development, exploration and security, we must pause to think collectively about the governance and sustainability of Earth as control extends into the universe. We need to prepare the next generation of citizens for this emerging field. We are experiencing a shift from globalization to ‘Universalization’ as this century’s paradigm.
Universalization asserts that we are living in ‘one world within the universe’ and that universal sustainability requires a cooperative and inclusive approach to development for the benefit of ALL. The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (UN2030 Agenda) speaks to “a broad and universal policy agenda … devoting ourselves collectively to the pursuit of global development and of "win-win" cooperation which can bring huge gains to all countries and all parts of the world.” The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space as well highlights, "use of space for the benefit of all humanity: for peace, security and development." The core values of Universalization, the UN COPUOS and the UN2030 Agenda are aligned and timely given the mounting pressures for effective governance of ‘universal’ issues.

As our civilization moves out into the solar system and beyond, will we be ready to govern ourselves in a way better than we have here on Earth? Today we’re joined at The Star Spot on location at the International Space Development Conference 2015 by space policy thinker and Vice Provost for Global Affairs at Ohio University, Lorna Jean Edmonds, who believes, “those who control the galaxy control the world.”

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Let’s discuss the future of Space Law. As part of the discussion, I will emphasize the critical role of law and policy in shaping (and preparing for) the privatization of space. I will touch on public-private partnerships and cross-border relationships as critical ingredients for successful development of the commercial space industry.

This book is based on the findings, conclusions and recommendations of the Global Space Governance study commissioned by the 2014 Montreal Declaration that called upon civil society, academics, governments, the private sector, and other stakeholders to undertake an international interdisciplinary study. The study took three years to complete. It examines the drivers of space regulations and standards, key regulatory problems, and especially addresses possible improvements in global space governance. The world's leading experts led the drafting of chapters, with input from academics and knowledgeable professionals in the public and private sectors, intergovernmental organizations, and nongovernmental organizations from all the regions of the world with over 80 total participants. This book and areas identified for priority action are to be presented to the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and it is hoped will be considered directly or indirectly at the UNISPACE+50 event in Vienna, Austria, in 2018.
The report, a collective work of all the contributors, includes objective analysis and frank statements expressed without pressure of political, national, and occupational concerns or interest. It is peer-reviewed and carefully edited to ensure its accuracy, preciseness, and readability. It is expected that the study and derivative recommendations will form the basis for deliberations and decisions at international conferences and meetings around the world on the theme of global space governance. This will hopefully include future discussion at the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

April 12, 2011 was the 50th Anniversary of Yuri Gagarin's pioneering journey into space. To commemorate this momentous achievement, Springer-Praxis has produced a mini-series of books that reveals how humanity's knowledge of flying, working, and living in space has grown in the last half century.
"Partners in Space" focuses on the early to late 1990s, a time in the post-Soviet era when relations between East and West steadily - though not without difficulty - thawed and the foundations of real harmony and genuine co-operation were laid for the first time with Shuttle-Mir and the International Space Station. This book explores the events which preceded that new ear, including the political demise of Space Station Freedom and the consequences of the fall of the Soviet Union on a once-proud human space program. It traces the history of "the Partnership" through the often traumatic times of Shuttle-Mir and closes on the eve of the launch of Zarya, the first component of today's International Space Station. -

The main purpose of the Astrosociology Research Institute (ARI) is to develop astrosociology as a multidisciplinary academic field consisting of the social and behavioral sciences, humanities, and the arts. Astrosociology is defined as the study of astrosocial phenomena (i.e., social, cultural, and behavioral patterns related to outer space). ARI's development of astrosociology serves to unite interested theoreticians, researchers, scholars, and students together so they may more easily collaborate on space issues from a broad social-scientific perspective; that is, a concentration on the human dimension.
